Chapter 9

The pittering sound of rock pebbles on the glass window in Willow’s room pulled me out of sleep, and I groaned as I rolled over and tried to ignore the irritating sound.

Then I felt the warmth of the woman next to me, and I peeled my eyes open to see the beautiful dark-haired shifter who appeared yesterday in Marbrooke. I watched her for a moment as she rested, and even though she was buried into the pillow and curled up into a ball, I couldn’t help but trace my gaze along the curve of her bare spine and follow her silhouette back up to her chest pressed against the bed.

Suddenly, three more pebbles pinged off the windowsill, and another hit the lower-right pane.

“Fucking hell…” I muttered in a barely-audible voice, and then I rolled over, took the blanket off me, and then tiptoed across the cold wooden floors.

I pulled back the thin but opaque beige curtain with my finger, but I kept my back against the wall in case it wasn’t friendly company. I leaned over and looked around the frame, and then I realized the sun hadn’t even risen yet. Lanterns and street lights were still lit, and the sky was painted with the colors of early dawn.

To my surprise Zolas was down below in the street, and he waved his arms as if he spun cell phone deal signs for a living. I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed before I unlatched the window lock, pushed it up, and leaned my head out of the window.

“What are you doing here?” I whisper-yelled to him with my eyebrows pulled together.

“Making sure you don’t get your ass handed to you on a plate, shifter.” Zolas threw his hands out to his sides with wide eyes. “No one has realized you’re gone yet, and I would like to keep it that way.”

I opened my mouth to argue with him, but then I closed it and swore under my breath.

The vampire had a point.

“If I’m not back in ten minutes, you can wake them up yourself,” I said.

“You sure you want me to do that?” Zolas asked with a sly grin, and he crossed his arms and cocked an eyebrow at me. “After you slept with the shifter ambassador of all people?”

“Of course not, but I’m going to be there anyway.” I smirked, and then I promptly shut the window and adjusted the curtain.

“A vampire with a heart?” Willow’s soft, groggy voice pulled my attention to her, and I turned to see her sitting upright in the bed. She’d smoothed out her hair, and her knees were pulled up to her chest with her arms wrapped around them. “That’s rare. And I’m assuming you have to go?”

“Sorry if that woke you up,” I sighed, and then I glanced around the room to locate all of my clothes. “And Zolas… he’s a good man. Weird as hell, but he’s had my back since I got here. And yeah… unfortunately, I do.
